Beate Vollack

Director of Dance at the Opéra national du Capitole

Born in Germany, Beate Vollack studied at the Berlin Ballet School.

In 1985, she began dancing as a soloist at the Komische Oper in Berlin.

After winning the 1994 USA International Ballet Competition in Jackson, she was invited to continue her career as a soloist at the Bayerisches Staatsballett, part of the Munich Opera, where she danced from 1995 to 2005. It was during these years in Munich that she made the leap from classical ballet to the world of modern and contemporary dance.

She then performed in the repertoires of the great choreographers of our time: Mats Ek, Jiří Kylián, William Forsythe, Patrice Bart, George Balanchine, Peter Wright, John Neumeier and many others. In 1997, the German press named her "Dancer of the Year" for her interpretation of Giselle in Mats Ek's choreography.

In 2000, she graduated as a ballet teacher from the University of Music and Arts in Munich. At the same time, she began creating for opera and ballet companies all over the world. She has worked for numerous international companies and festivals, including the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Royal Opera House in London, the Vienna Staatsoper, the Berlin Staatsoper, the Zurich Opera, the Graz Opera, the Théâtre de Bordeaux, the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, the Lincoln Festival in New York and the Salzburg Festival.

From 2014 to 2019, she is head of Tanzkompanie at the Theater St. Gallen in Switzerland, a company with a contemporary repertoire. She invites well-known choreographers to work with her, but is also attentive to the emergence of new talent: she creates a major competition on the theme of the seven deadly sins, in which the best choreographic proposal for each sin is then produced by Tanzkompanie at the Theater St. Gallen.

Since the 2018-19 season, Beate Vollack has directed the Graz Opera Ballet (Austria's second-largest opera house), which champions classical ballet at the highest level. As part of her responsibilities in St. Gallen and Graz, Beate Vollack also heads the company's School of Dance.

In June 2023, Beate Vollack is appointed Director of Dance at Opéra national du Capitole. Committed to preserving the company's academic identity, she will strive to bring the repertoire to life and enrich it, while continuing to develop group and individual excellence through contact with guest choreographers from diverse backgrounds. The Opéra national du Capitole ballet has 35 dancers and performs a wide repertoire, from academic ballet to contemporary creation, not forgetting the great masters of the 20th century, from George Balanchine to Carolyn Carlson. It performs in Toulouse and on tour in the Occitanie region, in major French venues and internationally. Aware of its role in society and a key player in the renewal of audiences, the ballet has a cultural and educational project open to all.
