With 66 applications examined, the third edition of the Competition for Young Ballet Choreographers has seen significant growth (32 candidates in 2016 and 40 in 2018), confirming its relevance and the existence of a promising pool of young choreographers with a strong attachment to Ballet, in France, Europe and internationally.
As with the first editions, the selection of the six finalists proved to be a difficult task for Bruno Bouché, Thierry Malandain and Eric Quilleré in terms of the quality of the applications. The profiles of the 14 women and 52 men who applied are very diverse:
- 27 nationalities represented, most of them European, including 14 French,
- Average age: 29,
- Most of them come from international troupes: Royal Ballet, Ballet Theater Basel, Polish National Ballet, Staatstheater Nürnberg Ballet, Queensland Ballet, Hamburg Ballet, Saarländisches Staatstheater, Ballet de l'Opéra national de Lyon, CCN-Ballet de l'Opéra National du Rhin, Batsheva Dance Company, Norwegian National Ballet, Tanz LuzernerTheater, Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, Royal New Zealand Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Scottish Ballet, Compañia nacional de Danza, Ballet national de Marseille, Jerusalem Ballet, Anhaltisches Theater Dessau, Ballet de Catalunya, Dutch National Ballet, Royal Danish Ballet, Bejart Ballet Lausanne, Hessisches Staatsballett, Dresden SemperoperBallett, Zurich Ballett, Mariinsky Theatre...
On 17 July 2022, thirty-four dancers and six finalists from different countries, selected from sixty-six candidates, will take part in the final:
• Kaloyan Boyadjiev, Bulgarian, aged 44,
Norwegian National Opera and Ballet ;
• Jorge García Pérez, Spanish, aged 34,
soloist at the Ballett Theater Basel ;
• Sophie Laplane, French, aged 38,
artist in residence at Scottish Ballet
• Andrew McNicol, British, aged 29,
The McNicol Ballet Collective ;
• Houston Thomas, American, aged 26,
soloist at the Dresden Semperoper Ballet ;
• Lucas Valente, Brazilian, aged 31,
dancer with the Zurich Ballett.
Le jury était composé de :
• Xenia Wiest, lauréate du Concours de jeunes chorégraphes de Ballet en 2016, aujourd’hui directrice du Ballett X Schwerin (Allemagne) ;
• Ingrid Lorentzen, directrice du Norwegian National Ballet ;
• Eric Quillere, directeur du Ballet de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux ;
• Bruno Bouché, directeur du CCN-Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin
• Thierry Malandain, directeur du CCN-Malandain Ballet Biarritz.
• Durant la saison 2022-23, Houston Thomas, américain, 26 ans, soliste au Dresden Semperoper Ballett créera une œuvre au Ballet de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux ;
• Lucas Valente, brésilien, 31 ans, danseur au Zurich Ballett créera quant à lui une œuvre au CCN-Ballet de l’Opéra national du Rhin.
• Kaloyan Boyadjiev, bulgare, 44 ans, du Norwegian National Opera and Ballet s’est vu attribué le prix de Biarritz, soit une bourse de 15 000 € dotée par la Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations.
• Invité à voter, le public a décerné son prix de 3 000 € alloué par la Fondation de la Danse à Sophie Laplane, française, 38 ans, artiste en résidence au Scottish Ballet.
• Doté d’une somme égale par le Fonds de dotation Malandain pour la Danse, le prix des professionnels, décerné par les critiques de danse et directeurs de théâtre a également été attribué à Sophie Laplane
Remerciements aux danseurs et candidats, à Stéphanie Porsain et Florent Trémolosa Florent Stephanie Origine Ateliers, créateurs du trophée remis aux lauréats, à la Ville de Biarritz, au public venu nombreux, à Martin Harriague, lauréat du Concours de jeunes chorégraphes de Ballet en 2016 et brillant maître de cérémonie, aux équipes administratives et techniques du CCN-Malandain Ballet Biarritz, et aux artistes du Malandain Ballet Biarritz : Julie Bruneau, Patricia Velázquez, Allegra Vianello, Raphaël Canet, Loan Frantz et Hugo Layer, qui durant la semaine précédant l’épreuve du concours ont appris et travaillé la chorégraphie présentée par Sophie Laplane, alors que la Compagnie était en récupération.
